  • How Streamline Shipping Group is Driving Changes in Sustainable Logistics across the UK

As conversations around climate targets and net zero continue to evolve, logistics is one sector where real, measurable change is both urgently needed and entirely possible. Transport and shipping contribute significantly to global emissions, and for companies involved in supply chains, cutting carbon isn’t just a regulatory pressure – it’s a business priority.

At Streamline Shipping Group, we believe sustainability and performance can go hand in hand. Our commitment to low-emission, sustainable freight solutions runs through every area of our business, from road haulage and marine operations to technology, fuels, and emissions-reduction products.

Why Sustainable Logistics Matters

For many businesses, logistics emissions fall into the category of Scope 3 – indirect emissions that occur throughout the supply chain. These can make up as much as 70–90% of a company’s total carbon footprint. Reducing them means choosing partners who not only move goods efficiently, but do so with minimal environmental impact.

The pressure to decarbonise is growing, both from government regulation and consumer expectations. Streamline is committed to helping clients stay ahead of these shifts through genuinely sustainable logistics services.

Investing in Low-Emission Freight Solutions to Drive Sustainable Logistics in the UK

We’re exploring a number of technologies and operational changes to reduce emissions across our network:

  • HVO Fuel Trials: Streamline is actively assessing Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a cleaner alternative to conventional diesel. It offers up to 90% CO2 reduction and requires no modifications to existing vehicles, making it a practical, scalable option.
  • Hydrogen HGV Pilot Projects: In partnership with the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise, we’re supporting feasibility work for hydrogen-powered heavy goods vehicles. These trials position us at the forefront of clean freight innovation in the UK.
  • Electric Vehicles for Island Deliveries: Our local delivery fleet in Orkney already includes electric vans, reducing tailpipe emissions in the areas we know best. This is part of our broader strategy to roll out EVs across suitable routes.
  • Route Optimisation and Telematics: Using Qargo intelligent planning software and fleet telematics, we monitor performance and optimise every delivery route to reduce fuel use and emissions.

Supporting Cleaner, Sustainable Marine Transport

Through our in-house division ECOurea, Streamline is directly involved in manufacturing and supplying emissions-reduction products that support greener shipping:

  • AdBlue: Reduces NOx emissions in road vehicles by up to 80%
  • AUS40: Used in marine applications, delivering up to 95% NOx reduction and full IMO Tier III compliance

This vertical integration allows us to not only cut our own emissions, but help customers and partners do the same.

H2: Innovation That Reaches Beyond Road and Sea: Our Sustainable Logistics Projects

Streamline is also part of pioneering R&D collaborations focused on the future of logistics:

Our location in Orkney, a hub for renewable energy and transport innovation, makes us uniquely placed to participate in and support emerging technologies.

Looking Ahead: Our 2025 – 2026 Roadmap

Sustainability at Streamline isn’t a side project – it’s core to our business. Our roadmap includes:

  • Further evaluation of HVO across our wider fleet
  • Expansion of our electric delivery vehicle coverage
  • Enhanced tracking of fleet-wide emissions
  • Ongoing investment in zero-carbon logistics trials
  • Increased production capacity of AUS40 for marine clients

Real Change Requires Real Action

The freight and logistics industry is changing. Streamline Shipping Group is proud to be part of that transformation, working not just to keep goods moving, but to do so in a way that supports a lower-carbon future.

For businesses seeking sustainable logistics solutions in the UK and beyond, we offer more than just transport. We offer partnership, innovation, and a shared commitment to doing better.
